A completed and signed Texas voter registration form is all it takes to make your vote count - but there's a catch. The form must be submitted at least 30 days before Election Day.
To register, voters must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a Texas resident.
Voters can mail their applications to their local elections office . In Harris County, that's the Harris County Tax Office .
DJ Ybarra, with Harris County Tax Assessor- Collector and Voter Registrar, said his office handles a significant volume of registrations throughout the year.
"Annually, we process about a half a million registrations, whether it's cancelations, new registrants or people that are just changing their information. So we're always busy and we're doing this work year round, but we always want to make sure that people are coming in, checking their status, and if they're not sure they can just go ahead and register again."
There is an online voter registration tool where residents can check their status by entering their personal information. That's exactly what Houston resident Colton Hill did.
"I'd been checking my voter registration status, discovered about two weeks ago I was on the suspense list. Made me paranoid, but I did look up, you can still vote. But I just want to make sure everything's good to go and my vote matters", said Hill.
It turned out Hill simply needed to update his address. He added that casting a ballot in the upcoming election is a priority.
"I want to vote in the midterms. I want to make sure my candidate gets my vote and it's super important to me", said Hill.
The voter registration deadline is Oct. 5. Election Day is Nov. 3.
