While this will likely be less memeable than the last fight, I'm thinking this will turn out to be more people's cup of tea - a great bantamweight fight to close out the prelims. Both fighters engaging in the clinch early, but not the sort of clinch that lands in the cage. Instead, the Thai clinch is occurring in the center of the cage. Vera seems to be getting the better of the exchanges. He gets Jourdain down briefly after catching a kick. They pop up and they clinch again. Good clinch strikes from Vera. Back at distance, both men land. Vera catches another kick and flips Jourdain into the fence. He ends up on top of Jourdain, who gets back up along the fence. Vera rips the head and body with thudding punches. 10-9 Vera.
It's either tied or 2-to-zip Despaigne. They both throw some big shots - a brief tease that the fight might return to its Round 1 level of excitement. Unfortunately, it does not. Tuivasa shoves Despaigne into the fence. They briefly separate. Tuivasa bites on his mouthpiece and throws a series of punches but I think he got the worst of them. Despaigne hit him with a hard counter that busted him. Tuivasa is bleeding now and wipes his face. Despaigne shoves him away. Tuivasa ties Despaigne up again along the fence. Despaigne hip tosses him and is in half-guard. Tuivasa wills his way to the feet. The 10-second clackers hit and Tuivasa throws a series of punches before exhaustedly resorting to the clinch again. Well, that first round was nutty. I'm sure the memers will be hard at work after this one. Tuivasa appears to be the much fresher fighter. He's making it gross up against the fence. Despaigne is sucking wind, mouth open. They separate. Despaigne gets Tuivasa down. After a little bit of stalling, referee Jason Herzog stands the fight up. Tuivasa, also tired, chugs along into Despaigne and ties him up against the fence. Much less eventful Round 2. These guys are gassed. 20-18 Despaigne.
The biggest of boys are up now. Tuivasa is likely fighting for his career. Despaigne is trying to make good on the start of a rare second UFC opportunity. Tuivasa comes right at Despaigne and gets nailed. Tuivasa doesn't care and keeps coming forward flinging punches. Despaigne tags him, but Tuivsasa returns. Oh, it appears both guys got stunned in that exchange. Tuivasa slinging punches with his hands down. Despaigne takes him down and mounts him. Referee Jason Herzog warns Despaigne repeatedly about his hand being in the fence. Tuivasa hits a switch on him and shoves Despaigne off. Yoo comes out aggressive, but more so with his striking. He tags Aswell several times and has him retreating. Aswell lands one good counter but Yoo walks through it. The action is picking up. And there it is - Yoo shoots and gets his takedown. Yoo draped on Aswell in half guard. The crowd is getting restless. Yoo moves to side control. He tries to hop into mount but Aswell scrambles toward the cage and up. He turns and presses Yoo into the fence. They separate and fling punches wildly. The horn sounds. Aswell continuing his confidence, and for good reason. He's moving better than Yoo, landing more, and has the Korean very hesitant. Aswell shoots for a takedown and shoves Yoo against the fence. The crowd doesn't like it. Aswell continues to pick apart Yoo, who slips on a kick. Aswell tries to capitalize but Yoo scrambles up and toward the fence. They separate and strike a little more before the round ends. 20-18 Aswell.
Featherweights next and these guys are throwing. Yoo seems to be a tad quicker and more explosive, but Aswell showing no fear and landing some good low kicks. Both guys are bleeding already. Aswell with lots of volume. He's the underdog here but isn't fighting like it. Yoo not moving his head much and Aswell is taking advantage of it. He ties Yoo against the fence as the horn sounds. 10-9 Aswell.
More middleweights. Gandra throwing some heat already. Diaz seems unable to calm the pace and looks uncomfortable. Gandra increases his aggression and backs Diaz up against the fence. A big punch drops Diaz! He's covering up. Gandra is pounding away - and it's over! Gandra with a quick TKO.
Ferreira needs a finish. The pace and tempo remain non-urgent, though, from both sides. Shahbazyan has a good excuse though. He's up. The crowd isn't loving this one. It's pretty quiet with the exception of an occasional boo. Ferreira being a little more aggressive now but is pulling his strikes. Shahbazyan tags Ferreira late. Ferreira goes stumbling backward into the cage and Shahbazyan charges him. He lands some more strikes, but nothing significant. Shahbazyan knocks down Ferreira again, right at the horn.
