The Vari ComfortEdge sits right in the sweet spot at the intersection of value, style, and functionality. After testing a half-dozen other standing desks, the ComfortEdge made former WIRED reviewer Martin Cizmar an evangelist. This, in turn, led me to the same conclusions about Vari's desks. At its price range, it offers the greatest adjustability, the easiest assembly, and certainly the longest warranty: Vari certifies its desks for life.

The desk's laminated wood top is easy to clean, and the "waterfall" sloped front edge allows you to comfortably rest your forearms for long periods while working and typing. Over eight hours, I can attest that this softer, sculpted edge makes a big difference. But also, there's the nearly incredible ease of assembly and disassembly, which Vari has made a hallmark since introducing their first standing desk conversion kits more than a decade ago. All you need to do is slide the T-shaped legs into their respective slots and attach with a couple screws. To take it apart, reverse this.

The desk height range is unusually wide, accommodating most heights. And unlike many standing desks, the ComfortEdge offers an option on wheels, which makes the desk wonderfully portable from room to room. There are buttons for four programmable preset heights, so you can press once and sip your coffee while it finds its level (or do what I sometimes do and micro-adjust for each task and posture.) The dual motors hum gently when changing position, at a quiet 50 or so decibels.

The ComfortEdge comes in sizes up to a massive 6-foot width , down to a Goldilocks 48-inch and a 40-inch that's excellent for small spaces and still has plenty of room for a keyboard, speakers, a mouse, and an iMac. There's something about a classic four-legged desk that looks so darn nice . It's not obvious that it's a standing desk until you see the little control panel on the desktop. Branch has several wood grains you can choose from for its plywood top, which adds to this desk's elegance. Rounded corners eliminate sharp edges. Four motors inside the telescoping powder-coated steel and aluminum legs help this desk glide up and down relatively quickly, though they're a little louder than I expected.

I've been quite happy with this desk after several months of use. Assembly was easy - just be prepared to handle a lot of screws. The control panel is, thankfully, simple too. Press the up and down arrows to your preferred height, press the M button, then press 1, 2, or 3 to save that height. No complicated settings menu here! I didn't find it wobbly, and I had no trouble mounting items to the desktop, whether it was monitor arms or a microphone arm. There's not much in the way of additional accessories at the moment - you can add a cable organizer, but that's about it.
