Two of the 10 most-winning programs in college football are set to play a home-and-home series for the first time in more than three decades.
Nebraska and Notre Dame jointly announced Wednesday that the games will be played Oct. 30, 2032, in Lincoln, Neb., and Oct. 29, 2033, in South Bend, Ind. The regular-season resumption of a historically significant series would mark the first games between these teams since the Cornhuskers swept a home-and-home series in 2000 and 2001.
Notre Dame has plenty of marquee games scheduled in advance, but the Nebraska series dates are significant. The last time Notre Dame and Nebraska played a home-and-home, those games fell in early, including the original Sea of Red game in Notre Dame Stadium that ended with Eric Crouch's game-winning touchdown in overtime on Sept. 9, 2000. Part of the reason Notre Dame's series with USC is on a four-year break is the Trojans' reluctance to play the game during the Big Ten schedule, with the Trojans historically coming to South Bend in October and the Irish headed to Los Angeles on Thanksgiving weekend. When the series returns, it will be played on the final weekend of August. Future games against Alabama, Texas and Michigan are scheduled for September, creating a competitive logjam for Notre Dame that can stick the Irish in an imbalanced schedule like last season when it opened at Miami and followed with a home game against Texas A&M. Notre Dame lost both, which ultimately eliminated the Irish from the CFP despite the 10-game winning streak to follow.
Playing Nebraska later gives Notre Dame better schedule balance, mixing its five-game allotment of ACC teams with one or two marquee games in September. Notre Dame got a similar deal with its upcoming home-and-home with Auburn. The Tigers visit the Irish the final weekend of September next season, and Notre Dame heads to Auburn on Oct. 28, 2028.
Notre Dame wants to continue playing teams from all four Power 4 conferences when it can - leaning into the Big Ten and SEC - but needs calendar flexibility to do it. The Nebraska series is an example of the Irish getting the kind of game they want and the right time on the schedule.
The Irish also have future games against Big Ten foes scheduled against Purdue (2027 and 2028), Michigan State (2027) and Michigan (2033 and 2034), in addition to the resumption of its rivalry against USC in 2030.
Notably, adding a high-profile program to the Nebraska schedule signals growing confidence in adopting an expanded College Football Playoff. Leaders at the school have been reluctant, in the current 12-team format, to add difficulty to schedules that include nine Big Ten opponents.
For the first time in modern history, the Huskers are not playing a power-conference foe outside of league play in the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Nebraska canceled a series set for this year and next with Tennessee, replacing the Volunteers this season with Bowling Green. Nebraska beat the Falcons 59-7 last Saturday.
Programs nationally are trending away from marquee non-conference matchups.
Nebraska has games scheduled against Power 4 opponents Arizona (2028 and 2031), Oklahoma (2029 and 2030), Cincinnati (2033) and Oklahoma State (2034 and 2035).
"The series with Notre Dame is the type of matchup that college football fans circle on their calendars years in advance," Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said in a statement. "Our fans have tremendous appreciation for the history of college football and iconic venues."
Notre Dame is tied with Texas for the fourth-most winning program nationally with 974 wins. Nebraska is ninth with 933. Nebraska is 8-7-1 against Notre Dame, including an Orange Bowl meeting in 1973 and trips by the Four Horsemen to play at Nebraska's Memorial Stadium in 1922 and 1923.
